Saving and versions: revise without losing text
Learn how history is created, compare changes, and restore a version without mistaking history for backup.

History comes from saves
When a relevant chapter or scene change is saved, Inkthar records a version automatically. There is no command to create or name manual snapshots. Check the saving indicator before closing the app or changing workflows.
Open Version history in the editor to see the date, source, and word count for each record. If texts conflict, compare them instead of choosing only by the newest date.
Compare before restoring
Select two versions or compare one with the current text. Switch between words, sentences, or lines and use unified or side-by-side views to locate additions and cuts.
Look for changes in meaning beyond counts. A shorter version may contain the right solution, and a newer one may have removed necessary information.
- Select a version in history
- Use Compare with current or select two versions
- Review every changed block
- Only then choose Restore
Restore and verify the result
When you restore, Inkthar automatically preserves the previous text in an internal version and offers Undo immediately after the operation. Check the beginning and end of the restored scene before continuing.
Versions do not replace backups. Use history for editorial decisions and backups for disk failure, computer loss, or damaged files.
