Format in preview after the text settles

Open Publishing when chapter and scene structure is close to its destination. Choose page size, margins, typography, and chapter theme, then inspect contents, breaks, long titles, and scene separators.

The paginated preview may need to recalculate after changes. Wait for the update indicator before judging a break or exporting. Edit content in the editor and use Publishing for edition decisions.

Choose a format for the next step

PDF preserves pagination for proofs and print. EPUB is reflowable and should be tested in more than one reader. DOCX supports editorial exchange. Portable HTML works outside the app, while Markdown keeps simple, readable text.

No single format covers every destination. Keep an editable output alongside a final reading file.

  • PDF: proof and print
  • EPUB: e-readers
  • DOCX: editorial review
  • HTML: portable document
  • Markdown: simple, portable text

Run quality control outside the app

Open the export in the program your recipient will use. Check title page, contents, first and last chapter, italics, special characters, and unusual breaks. For EPUB, test navigation and resizing; for PDF, verify page size and fonts.

Name files with book, stage, and date. The suggested name comes from the book title and replaces incompatible characters. Check the Downloads folder or the location chosen in the save dialog before exporting again.
